EARLY CARVED AND PAINTED WOODEN MASK $ 110U.S.
This is an old carved and painted wooden mask. It evidently is supposed to represent a bison or bull. I have not seen anything quite like it, so I'm having difficulty determining it's meaning, origin, or attribution. It is about 8 1/2" by 8 1/4" wide, and 8" deep and weighs about two and a half pounds, before packing. It is old and untouched, hasn't been cleaned up, has some checking of the paint that corresponds with the grain of the wood. Wonderful patina, and vibrant colors. The eyes are cut all the way through and are rectangular in shape. There are another set of "eyes"? painted next to them that look like some sort of sun symbol. The horns were carved separately and mortised through the mask, as you can see the pegs from the backside. The mouth and nostrils are carved and painted red with a black outline. I don't know how to put a value on it, but If anyone has further information to provide, I would appreciate it.
